Guaymas 2020

Guaymas 2020
The year of the Optometrist
-By Dr. Luke-

What an interesting way to start a trip...on the way down to Mexico, in Arizona, we stopped to eat at a restaurant and there was a crash right out front. Bob, a retired police officer, and I ran to the scene to make sure everyone was ok. I called 911 and we checked on everyone...thank the Lord, only the vehicles were badly damaged. We went back inside when the police and fire trucks showed up. The crew from Chicago flew into Arizona, I drove to meet them and we all rented buses for the last 5-6 hours of the trip south to Mexico.
Doctor Dave and I

It was a truly wonderful week with such good friends, new and old! It was and is always a pleasure to work with Dr. Dave. He was the one that invited me to my first ever mission trip and he holds such a special place in my heart. Dr. Brittany was there too...she was on the first trip also. The three of us ended up being the only docs on the trip, as the students were unable to make it this year. The rest of the team was incredible as we worked together to see around 800 patients in 7 days...wow!

There were so many patients that were blind from cataracts. The body of Christ that the team came from pays for the surgery for each and every one that needs it...what a blessing! I saw one sweet patient that had a genetic disease that caused gradual blindness from the periphery to the center, one with a cancerous tumor on her optic nerve, and one with a malignant tumor on the front of his eye.

Those cases always make me feel sad and heavy. It's not good news to share with them, but it does amaze me each time to see the strength in these beautiful people when they realize that this life is not the end. Their story, and mine, will not end here. That thought gives me such hope.

I'm so thankful at this time for what the Lord has done for me. I remember that He has saved me, He has bought me, and He has cleansed me with His blood that He shed on the cross.

“My hope is found in nothing less, than Jesus' blood and righteousness.”
